When will the rains start? This question, and others like it, get to the heart of some of the biggest contemporary challenges in regional weather and climate prediction. Solving such questions in regional climate prediction and risk assessment are a crucial part of reducing climate impacts in regions most vulnerable to continued planetary warming. Much of our work focusses on regions at the edge of the tropics where the climate dynamics controlling rainfall seasonality and change remain poorly understood and poorly predicted. You would join a collaborative research team's efforts to solve these problems making use of newly-obtained field observations, cutting-edge convective-scale models, and state-of-the-art global prediction systems. There is ample scope to develop DPhil projects across a range of these approaches in collaboration with the research team.
